A national nonprofit initiative of the insurance industry, IBHS engages in communication, education, engineering and research to reduce social and economic losses caused by natural disasters.
Construction of the house will follow criteria of the IBHS Fortified…for safer living® program, which increases a new home's resistance to natural disaster from the ground up. All regions of the country are exposed to one or more extreme weather events, such as high wind, wildfire, flood, hail, severe winter weather and earthquake, so the program specifies construction, design and landscaping guidelines to protect a home from the hazards it will face.
The NextGen07 home will eventually be permanently sited in Florida, so building materials and techniques will increase its ability to withstand high winds, wildfire and flooding – the state’s three most destructive natural threats.
It will have upgraded roof-to-wall and wall-to-foundation connections that withstand up to 130 mph peak wind gusts; roofing materials that resist high wind, hail impact and fire; a secondary moisture barrier to prevent water intrusion; plus windows and doors that are protected from flying debris.
The Fortified…for safer living® program heralds a new way to build homes in disaster-prone areas, as safety-conscious consumers drive the market for hazard-resistant residences. Nearly 2,500 Fortified homes are either complete, under construction or part of larger development plans in a dozen states.
This is the fourth year IBHS has been involved in the NextGen Home Experience.
